St Michael's York Trust - Meet the Trustees

Picture
John Ransford
Chair of Trustees
I became aware of Spurriergate when I worked for North Yorkshire County Council thirty years ago.
After I retired in 2012 I became more connected to the centre through my membership of St Michael le Belfrey church. I have been volunteering here since 2013, served as the Chair of the former trading company, and have been a Trustee since 2014. I am the Trust chair for 2021/22.
We have entered a new season at Spurriergate. We believe that God is leading us to develop something distinctive on the high street, offering a window on His Kingdom; spiritual, physical and social hospitality; a commitment to social justice and a Christian community with a heart beating with God’s love in this place.
My ambition is that we should be open all the time, day and night, offering a range of activities to demonstrate this and to ensure that this wonderful, historic building is a living testimony to Him and how He transforms lives.

Having lived and worked in York since 1989, I, like so many people, had been customer of Spurriergate for a while, but
became more involved with the work of Spurriergate around 2015 when invited to be a Trustee. I tend to look after the technology (WiFi etc) and have recently been implementing repairs and upgrade to our fabric. What that actually means is that I get to explore some of the more unusual and hidden parts of this wonderful, ancient building.
Post Covid - these are exciting times...

I am delighted to have joined the Trustees as we explore what God has planned for the Spurriergate Centre.
I first came to York as a History of Art student, and am now the Operations Manager at The Belfrey. I have been on the team at The Belfrey in different roles since graduating. Social enterprise, sustainability, innovative ideas and strong communities get my attention, especially when they all come together in one package like they do at Spurriergate!

I moved to York with my wife in 2016 to be nearer our family.  As we explored the city Spurriergate was one place I felt to be extra special.
In our first year living here, as I reflected on this new chapter living in the north, I would often visit, sit upstairs in the 'prayer space' and spend time reading the Bible. Now as we (staff and trustees)  look forward we sense that God has much more in store to bless the people in York, both residents and visitors, who come to this historic city-centre church building.
My prayer is that we find and develop His best plans and purposes and see them fulfilled in the years ahead, for His glory.
